Role: Clean Tech Portfolio Manager - Emerging Markets Fund of Funds
Industry: Private Equity
Client: $10B asset management firm

CHALLENGE
Our well-capitalized client was launching a new venture specializing in Impact Investment with initial raise of $250M for their Microfinance, Clean Tech and Affordable Housing Funds of Funds.   They sought a leader with an ability to analyze, invest and develop a portfolio of Clean Technology private equity and venture funds. A mature skill set with diverse experience in a nascent industry was required including:

  • Ability to make decisions within limited universe of clean technology funds investing in competitive, regulatory favorable companies, offering significant margins and upside potential.
  • History of socially responsible practices, both professional and personally.
  • Decision weighted to those who had served in organizations such as the World Trade Organization or Peace Corps or who were advocates for global causes of countries and cultures with limited resources.

Our Client was able to find candidates with technology and fund of funds investment background, but not much depth or understanding of the unique qualities of cleantech investment.  Particularly challenging was the desire to find a candidate offering a cultural fit with sensitivity to Impact Investing to effect social and economic change.

ILM & PARTNERS APPROACH
ILM & Partners prepared a thorough and detailed profile and developed a search process that leveraged our deep experience in private equity and emerging markets and global resource network to identify candidates with the education, acumen and life experience to fulfill the needs of this specialized role. The search was partner-led and executed throughout each stage of the process facilitating a thorough and expedited process.

ILM & PARTNERS RESULTS
Through extensive research we were able to identify a very small universe of candidates with the qualifications of advanced technology education and training, Certified Financial Analyst designation, experience in managing fund portfolios and proclivity to socially responsible investment. These candidates had made the transition to clean technology investment and possessed the core skill sets to accelerate further depth in the industry.

Within a month we had a short list of eight qualified candidates. Our client interviewed this initial candidate pool, selected three finalists and hired their number one choice.

The candidates were attracted to the fundamentals, direction and stability of our client as well as the high-profile opportunity to launch a new venture with a well-capitalized firm in an emerging market. The opportunity was an excellent one for the candidate providing a Fund leadership role, a highly competitive financial and incentive package, and an investment platform for influencing change in a burgeoning industry.
